For better or worse, my photography is tangled with my professional history. For over three decades I served as a police officer during which time I took or viewed enough crime scene and forensic imagery to last me a long, long time. I think my search for simple, quiet beauty is a result of this exposure.
With my dance photography I have sought to capture beautiful / interesting / quirky moments with dancers - sometimes all three. Indeed, these photographs represent a storyline in a moment…a narrative of practice, dedication, sacrifice, strength, power, challenge, grace, elegance, frustration and elation all distilled into 1/1500th of a second. Some of these dancers have not reached their teens yet they possess the tranquility of confidence, composure and poise that sees them achieve astounding results. I can only say, “BRAVO!”
We all have our own thoughts on what makes a "beautiful" picture. My take is rather simple - beauty is something we can appreciate for its own sake, rather than for what we may be able to do with it, or what it can do for us. It can be found in many places, in many ways and experiencing it is its own reward.

I have a deal with the dancers I photograph. At their photo shoot they will perfectly execute a movement and I will skillfully time a shutter release to capture their flawless action. But...dance photography doesn’t always work like that though…many perfect moves have been lost whilst I fumbled my end of the deal or vice versa. In the end though, we have prevailed through laughter and good humour…we hope you enjoy our photographs of beautiful athletes.
For as long as we have been thinking about these things, the question of art vs. athleticism has been raised with regard to dance and it’s unlikely to be solved within the pages of this website. For as long as we have been thinking about these things, the question of art vs. athleticism has been raised with regard to dance and it’s unlikely to be solved within the pages of this website. All I can offer is that the dancers I have photographed are among the most talented athletes I have ever seen and their artistry is clearly evident. Totally unhelpful in solving the riddle, but hey…let’s just enjoy both!
What I have discovered with the experience of photographing dancers is that a tension exists between dance and photography. Dance is movement through time and photography is about stopping movements in time…movements that can never be repeated because there will always be a difference. When dancers perform there is a moment and then…it’s gone.
With The Dance Gallery I am trying to capture and document that moment. I’m not looking for tricks…an exquisite hand gesture, an effortless, serene facial expression or a quiet breath will capture me as much as a perfectly executed grand jeté.
